How are fruit bubbles or even molecular dishes made? Now you can show your skills and become a molecular cuisine expert. Science Promotion Unit and Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) will jointly organise “Popping Fruit Bubbles” workshop during HK SciFest. Participants will learn the technique of chemical encapsulation and prepare various types of fruit juice bubbles. Chemical encapsulation is the process in which tiny droplets are surrounded by a coating that forms when two solutions are mixed. This technology has many applications in our everyday life including molecular gastronomy and the next generation of drug and food supplements. AI identification of light pollution sources
Light pollution is a global environmental issue in which excessive artificial outdoor lightings affect the natural environment and the ecosystem. Among different forms of light pollution, light trespass needs immediate attention due to its potential adverse impacts on human health. The problem of light trespass is particularly evident in a densely-populated metropolis like Hong Kong. Using Artificial Intelligence (AI), computation methods are developed to detect, classify and quantify the light sources in images and videos taken at the street level. Results can be used as a light condition analysis for analyzing whether light emitters are sourced from commercial buildings or street areas to determine the effects of light pollution on residents’ views. As a citizen science project, members of the public are encouraged to contribute images or videos to expend the coverage of the study. The lecture introduces light pollution, citizen science projects and the research conducted by the University of Hong Kong. Supported by the RAE 2026 Fund of The University of Hong Kong.

Yuen Long Bypass Floodway is a 3.8km long large drainage channel built at the south of Yuen Long Town. The Bypass Floodway has incorporated a series of environmental designs to provide a natural riverbank with aesthetic and ecological value. A system of dry weather flow pumping station and inflatable dam is provided at the downstream end. Apart from visiting the Bypass Floodway, introduction of Village Flood Protection Scheme, the operation of San Tin Stormwater Pumping Station, as well as Floating Photovoltaic System and Floating Ecological Island set up in San Tin Stormwater Storage Pond will be included in the guided tour.

Drainage Services Department Sha Tin Central Laboratory Guided Tour
Sha Tin Central Laboratory commenced in May 2004. The laboratory commits to provide professional and high quality testing services for operating various sewage treatment works of DSD. It also collects and analyses sewage samples on a regular basis to ensure compliance of the effluent quality meeting the discharge standards stipulated by the Environmental Protection Department. The laboratory adopts automatic analysers to conduct speedy, accurate and comprehensive tests on the nutrients, trace metal elements and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels of sewage. In the fiscal year of 2021, more than 226,000 analyses were analysed. This virtual tour introduces the laboratory facilities and its functions to public.

Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab: Health Assessment of Marine Tetrapods
Since 2014, our team has applied a cutting-edge technique named ''virtopsy'' on local Cetacean Stranding Investigation. This technique was later extended to the research on stranded sea turtles since 2019. This technique enhances better understanding and gives insights into health conditions and life history of the stranded aquatic animals, and their injuries and deaths caused by human interactions. The collected data enable assessment of aquatic animals' health and provide an important reference to the development of a unique centralised database and long-term strategies for conservation of aquatic animals. Such a complete ecosystem indicator may eventually support the conservation and policy decision for all oceans, leading to an "One Ocean-One Health" paradigm.

Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab: 60 Minutes with the Cetacean and Sea Turtle Skeleton
Cetaceans and sea turtles are believed to be good sentinels for ocean and human health given their many unique natural attributes. Aquatic Animal Virtopsy Lab study these aquatic animals as part of a multi-pronged effort to understand their lives and deaths. Our team collects and catalogues the bones of the stranded cetaceans and sea turtles, which allows us to determine subtle differences between populations and abnormalities and pathologies among individuals. This workshop allows participants to learn the cetacean and sea turtle anatomy, biological health and even health conditions through assembling the cetacean and sea turtle skeletal specimen. Our team will also introduce the 3D surface scanning in the workshop, a forensic technique to document external condition of a carcass or an inflicting tool. Participants could understand more about these valuable aquatic animals through various angles. Fans of cetaceans and sea turtles should not miss this valuable chance!

Popular Science Reading Workshop - Urban Microclimate
To promote science reading to a wider audience, Science Promotion Unit has launched the Popular Science Reading Workshop since 2022, in which local science writers are invited to share their popular science books and provide interesting activities for participants to explore science through the books. Mr. Tony Leung Wing Kin, a popular science writer, will introduce his book in the workshop. Through outdoor eco-tour and microclimate data collection, participants can learn more about ecology in the city, and explore the causes, consequences, as well as solutions in addressing urban heat island effect.

The Solar Energy Solutions Towards Carbon Neutrality in Hong Kong
Hong Kong government has set an ambitious goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, and a critical strategy in its overall planning is to increase the deployment of renewable solar energy. In this talk, the speaker will discuss how we can rely on technological innovation to tackle this grand challenge; particularly, we have identified a new generation of printable, flexible, transparent, and colour-tunable solar cells as the most prominent photovoltaic technology to promote solar energy deployment in Hong Kong. Such a new generation solar cell technology can be integrated as tinted solar windows, façades, or curtains with buildings to generate significantly more solar electricity in an urban city, which usually has limited lands and rooftops for installing conventional silicon solar panels.

How does attention affect our emotion? How does emotion and attention work together to influence our mental wellbeing? In this session, we will cover foundational knowledge about emotion. Psychological, physiological and neural factors will be discussed. We will also look at how emotion and attention affect each other, and together play a role in our mental health. During this session, the audience may be invited to participate in activities.
