What is HK SciFest?

HK SciFest is one of the largest events in Hong Kong to promote popular science. It has been organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum since 2014. The festival brings together science and technology organisations, education institutions, schools, tertiary institutions, museums and government departments to provide a wide variety of exciting science programmes to allow everyone to explore, discover and have fun in science. We hope the HK SciFest will kindle the public’s interest in science, thereby fostering an inquisitive and innovative science culture.

About HK SciFest 2023

HK SciFest 2023 will be held from 31 March to 16 April 2023 with the theme of “Science Around You”.

Science is inseparable from our daily lives. If we look carefully, we will find that many natural phenomena and things around us can be explained by science. For example, the blue sky is due to light scattering; sunflowers pack their seeds tightly in a spiral without overlapping by following the golden angle of 137.5 degrees; coffee has a unique aroma because of a particular set of chemical reactions that occur during the roasting process. Furthermore, scientists apply a variety of scientific knowledge to develop new technologies to improve our lives. For instance, the Global Positioning System (GPS) makes use of Einstein’s relativity theory to help us accurately locate our cell phones; fluorescent lamps use plasma to produce light; optical fibres rely on total internal reflection of light to transmit signals in the blink of an eye. Science is ubiquitous.

With over 70 partners and units working in tandem, the HK SciFest 2023 is proud to present more than 140 fascinating programmes related to this year’s theme “Science Around You”. These programmes will allow you to learn more about the science of natural phenomena, the working principles of everyday products, and the technologies that improve our well-being. We will also organise outreach programmes in communities and a new online science carnival to bring science to you wherever you are, whenever you want. In addition, we continue to promote the learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the festival through various STEM-related programmes.

This year, for the first time, we collaborate with a local comic artist Linus Liu to design the key visual of HK SciFest 2023. The image is a building that shows those daily activities of the residents that are related to science, just like our real lives. We hope to present the theme “Science Around You” from the unique perspective of the artist to show the fun and colourful face of science.

Come and join us at HK SciFest 2023. Let’s explore the science around you, both

online and offline!
